About Borders Traditions

The Scottish Borders has a rich cultural heritage and strong living cultural traditions. The focus of our work here has been on celebrating the Scottish Borders traditional arts.
The mainstays of our programme are:

  • an ongoing research programme to retrieve recordings of Borders traditional performers from local, regional and international archives and making new recordings of today's exponents of Borders traditional music, song, dance and storytelling
  • making that material into a new cultural archive
  • putting the archive on the web
  • dissemination of material from the archive



Borders Traditions

  • a CD label - a blend of new and archive recordings featuring the Scottish Borders traditions of fiddle playing, singing, accordion and box playing and piping
  • publications - paperback publications from the material collected for the new archive

Outreach

  • creating new opportunities for Scottish Borders traditional musicians, singers and storytellers in performance and on tour
  • supporting and adding to the calendar of traditional music and song concerts and festivals



Education

  • supporting traditional music in schools
  • supporting traditional music learning and playing in the community
  • producing a new traditional music education pack
