Jedburgh Callants' Festival

This festival dates from 1947 and lasts for two weeks.

There are various rides. One goes to Redeswire for an oration. The Callant then takes the Jethart Flag to Ferniehurst Castle and a ceremony at the Capon Tree (still survives from the ancient Jed Forest). On Saturday, a cannon is fired to start a race around the town, followed by the Jedburgh Border Games.

The first reel danced by the Jethart Callant is in Morebattle at the beginning of July, when he meets the Kelso Laddie and dances a variation of the Eightsome Reel, repeated in Ancrum on the Wednesday.

The Callant's Reel is performed at a concert in Jedburgh Town Hall on the Thursday. The Callant's Ball is on the Friday. Here, the Callant's Reel is danced several times, beginning at 2.00am on the Saturday. The reel itself is danced as a square set, and incorporates strathspey timing.
